Marek Pospieszalski

Marek Pospieszalski is a saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist, composer, and arranger whose work unfolds at the intersection of contemporary composition, improvisation, and experimental music. At the core of his artistic practice lies the relationship between carefully designed musical form and the freedom of performance. Rather than treating composition as a fixed structure, he approaches it as a framework for collective listening and interpretation, allowing form to emerge through the interactions between musicians. A significant part of his work is devoted to reinterpreting the legacy of 20th-century Polish composers, opening their music to contemporary improvisational and experimental practices. His musical language is also distinguished by a strong focus on timbre and sonic detail, which he regards as structural elements equal in importance to melody or harmony.

His projects range from solo performances and intimate collaborations—most notably the duo Malediwy with drummer Qba Janicki—to a quartet and his flagship octet featuring some of Poland’s leading improvisers. It is with this ensemble that he established a long-term collaboration with the Portuguese label Clean Feed, releasing a series of critically acclaimed albums dedicated to the music of 20th-century Polish composers. Alongside his extensive work in improvised and experimental music, he also composes for ensembles and orchestras. In 2024, he premiered Nadnaturalny, a concerto for saxophone, tape, and chamber orchestra commissioned by AUKSO, and created a new orchestral arrangement of the iconic Cowboy Bebop soundtrack for Sinfonietta Cracovia.
