John Duncan

John Duncan is an American sound artist, performer, and installation creator, considered one of the most radical and influential figures in the experimental sound scene. Born in 1953 in Wichita, Kansas, his artistic beginnings date back to the 1970s when he joined the avant-garde Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS). Even then, his work blurred the lines between performance, experimental music, pirate radio broadcasting, and conceptual art.

Duncan is known for creating intense psychophysical sound experiences using shortwave recordings, field recordings, processed voice, and electronics. His music and performances are filled with tension, unease, and confrontation — often challenging the audience to go beyond their comfort zone. Themes of power, control, embodiment, and risk are central to his projects, as is the exploration of the relationship between sound and consciousness. Since the 1980s, Duncan has worked within Tokyo’s art scene, further developing his experiments with noise, radio, and performance before relocating to Europe.
