Guro S. Moe
Guro S. Moe is a Norwegian artist, composer, performer, and writer whose practice moves fluidly between experimental and contemporary music, theatre, text, and performance. While bass guitar and voice remain her primary instruments, she has never approached them as stable performative tools. Instead, they function as entry points into a broader exploration of energy, friction, presence, and the materiality of sound. Her work consistently seeks a form of sound that is physical, immediate, at times raw, and resistant to complete capture or control.
Her artistic activity encompasses both collaborative and solo projects. One of her most significant long-term collaborations is MoE, the project she co-founded with Håvard Skaset, which has developed a singular language situated between improvisation, noise, contemporary music, and experimental ensemble practice. Alongside MoE, Moe collaborates extensively with artists working across improvisation, contemporary composition, and interdisciplinary performance, deliberately avoiding permanent affiliation with any single aesthetic or artistic milieu.
In her solo practice, music intersects with text, movement, spatial intervention, and light. A recurring concern in her work is the relationship between what is heard and what is seen—the space that emerges when these two modes of perception no longer coincide. Rather than seeking their synthesis or resolution, she is interested in sustaining them in a state of active tension and uncertainty. In her reflections on artistic practice, Moe often describes creation as a process of following the unknown rather than confirming predetermined forms. Equally important is her conviction that expression emerges most fully when different media, modes of presence, and ways of thinking encounter one another.
An essential aspect of her work is the creation of conditions for collective artistic activity. Together with Håvard Skaset, she co-runs Børsen Kulturhus, an independent centre for artistic production and residencies in Norway, developed as a platform for strengthening both local and international networks of experimental art and culture.
