Sholto Dobie

Sholto Dobie is a Scottish sound artist, composer, and curator based in Vilnius, Lithuania. His practice centres on self-built instruments, site acoustics, and the materiality of sound. Working with handmade reed organs, concertinas, and simple mechanical and pneumatic systems, he treats air not merely as a medium for transmitting sound but as the primary material of composition. His works unfold through open-ended structures, intuition, and close engagement with the spaces in which they are created, occupying a fluid territory between concert, installation, and performance. In his practice, technology is not simply a tool but an active collaborator in the production of sonic events.

Alongside his artistic work, Dobie has developed an extensive curatorial practice. In Vilnius, he runs the Progine concert and radio series, and since 2025 has served as Artistic Director of the Jauna Muzika festival. His work draws on folklore, acoustic environments, and vernacular sound practices, approaching traditional instruments not as carriers of cultural heritage but as technologies that shape the movement of air and modes of listening. His recordings have been released by Mappa, All Night Flight, Infant Tree, Takuroku, Penultimate Press, and Thanet Tape Centre.
