Robin Fox
Robin Fox is an Australian audiovisual artist and composer whose practice unfolds at the intersection of sound, light, and space. For many years, he has developed works in which image and sound do not function as separate layers, but emerge simultaneously as manifestations of the same process—a shared flow of energy, movement, and signal.
At the centre of his practice are laser performances in which light is not used illustratively but becomes a fully-fledged compositional material. Fox employs the same electrical signal to generate both image and sound, creating situations in which the audible and the visible remain directly coupled. The result is not a synchronization of two media, but the experience of a single event unfolding simultaneously across acoustic and visual space.
In his work, Fox treats space itself as both an instrument and an environment of perception. He is interested in the ways frequencies organize attention, orientation, and the physical experience of presence. Characteristic of his practice is an understanding of light as a form of signal drawing—a means of creating geometries that can be both seen and heard. He has described this approach as a form of mechanical synesthesia.
Alongside his performance work, Fox has composed extensively for contemporary dance and developed numerous installation-based and site-specific projects. He is also a co-founder of MESS (Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio), an institution dedicated to the preservation, accessibility, and public use of electronic musical instruments. His works have been presented internationally, and his performance TRIPTYCH received the Isao Tomita Special Prize at Ars Electronica 2023.
