softchaos
softchaos is the project of Tere Stouffer, an Ecuadorian-American interdisciplinary artist, writer, performer, and practitioner working across experimental music and club culture. Their practice unfolds between sound, language, performance, and theory, approaching these fields not as separate media but as interconnected ways of organizing experience and producing meaning.
At the core of softchaos lies an interest in what emerges between transmission and interference, between legibility and opacity, between embodied experience and its social inscription. Working intuitively with text, voice, sound, and borrowed materials, they create situations that initially appear direct and accessible, yet gradually reveal layers of complexity, ambiguity, and fractured meaning. Poetry, performance studies, critical theory, and questions surrounding subjectivity, memory, and presence remain important points of reference throughout their work.
Alongside their artistic practice, softchaos is also active as a DJ, developing sets informed by a critical engagement with the history of club music and its political potential. References to the sonic landscapes of Detroit, Chicago, and New York are present throughout their performances, not as acts of reconstruction but as living material continuously displaced, transformed, and recontextualized. Groove, percussive energy, and club-oriented intensity meet a deliberate resistance to established listening habits and genre classifications.
Their work has been presented in contemporary art institutions as well as festival and club contexts, including ICA London, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, MACBA, CTM Festival, Sónar, Primavera Sound, Tresor, and Fabric.
