Listening as Method
What does listening make possible in artistic practice, research, public space and politics?
Listening as Method approaches listening as an active and situated practice through which knowledge emerges, relations are shaped, and forms of agency can be explored within social and spatial situations.
A two-year Creative Europe cooperation project, Listening as Method brings together sound artists, researchers, curators and cultural organisations from Poland, Czechia and Portugal. It connects sound studies, artistic research and curatorial practice with fields such as architecture, ecology, media and technology, forensic studies, restorative justice, care practices, social research and activism, in order to explore listening as an epistemic, artistic and political practice.
The project combines transdisciplinary research with artistic and public activities: research sessions, lectures, workshops, performances, public events, policy dialogues and a growing digital archive. Through these formats, it examines how listening can produce knowledge, shape relations and inform artistic, public and policy-oriented work within a transnational framework.
The programme at Sanatorium of Sound marks the public opening of Listening as Method. Developed in dialogue with Robert Piotrowicz, it introduces the project through a lecture by Brandon LaBelle, a workshop by Elia Moretti, and performances by Gustavo Costa and Orsolya Kaincz. These events open a process that will unfold over the next two years through artistic research and sonic investigation in collaboration with Sanatorium of Sound.
The project is led by Fundacja Sztuki Współczesnej In Situ (Poland), in partnership with Ferst Dadler z.s. (Czechia) and Sonoscopia Associação Cultural (Portugal). It is co-funded by the European Union through the Creative Europe programme.
